Prime Minister Mr Cameron has announced that he will step down after losing the historic referendum on Britain's membership of the EU. Mr Cameron said that he hopes that a new Prime Minister will be in office by October after a Conservative leadership contest. He said: "I will do everything I can as Prime Minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months, but I don't think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination."But who could take the top job and move into Downing Street after Mr Cameron's departure?

His budget speech earlier this year was widely seen as a way to position himself as the next leader of the Tory party.But the resounding Brexit win not only makes this extremely unlikely, but it could mean that Mr Osborne loses his own job as Chancellor. The odds of Mr Osborne being the next Tory leader have fallen to 20/1 today after the Brexit vote, according to William Hill. 

Who else could be Conservative leader? 
Pro-Brexit energy minister Andrea Leadsom spoke with conviction and impressed the audience at the BBC's big referendum debate.  The odds of her becoming the next Conservative have shortened to 12/1 today, according to William Hill. Stephen Crabb and Priti Patel are at 16/1, Amber Rudd and Ruth Davidson are at 25/1 and Sajid Javid and Philip Hammond are at 20/1, the bookie said. 
Mr Crabb replaced Iain Duncan Smith as shadow work and pensions secretary, while Priti Patel has been a key figure in the Vote Leave campaign. 

Remain advocate and Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson was also a powerful figure in the BBC debate.
